A bit off topic, sorry, but as a long-time rider of litre+ road bikes recently forced onto a 300cc bike by arthritis, that last page from a magazine article made me smile: "the
brute strength of its 250cc engine"

Hi Greg, I need the photo to keep the memory alive. It is poster size and lives in the man cave.
Yes, a Montesa 172, the original red one. Could never get my head around them being any other colour. Anyway, bought it new in late 1976. Brand new - $950.
It was an aftermarket bashplate. The shape of a large shovel. Plastic. Served me well.
I suffered the same kick starter shaft fail as many others did. The original shaft had the groove all the way around and didn't take long to shear off. It was replaced under warrenty with one that had a short groove on one side of the shaft. Served well for many years. The kick starter was off a Cota 123.
