David, thats a nice paint job on the KT! We may have to awaken that KT collector to compete in the bling contest.

SQTA crew in conjunction with the Gough family, we really enjoyed the Jeff Gough Invitational and very happy that you are encouraging more older bikes. With Andy RL, Baxy TLR, Chippy TL, Goffy RS, Hagsta TY certainly made things interesting! Personally I thought it about time my TL125S loan bike (See page 5 for photo and story) had it's first trial. Really enjoyed riding the cleverly set diversified sections. A little disappointed that the only Bultacos there, were the ones on the trophys.

Chippy, congratulations for winning our TL Challenge! That makes it one all after I squeezed in front of you at the TY Challenge.

I've got a couple of TY175s completely apart and decided to compare the weights of the components that are not the same. One is a Whitlock TY175 and the other is a TY175B. The Whitlock uses the running gear from a TY175 so I have weighed the main items that are different on the two bikes.
Main frame section
Yamaha 8.2kg Whitlock 6.1kg
Swingarm
Yamaha 2.0kg Whitlock 2.0kg
Stand
Yamaha 0.5kg Whitlock 0.5kg
Seat
Yamaha 1.0kg Whitlock 0.5kg
Tank
Yamaha 2.3kg Whitlock 1.7kg

Net difference between them = 14kg - 10.8kg = 3.2kg

Yeah, the problem is all that heavy fresh paint on the Yamaha frame. Strip that off and leave it ugly then the problem is solved.
You have to love an ugly TY.

Heres andy's RL the weekend before the SQTA trial at the working bee. New rims and tyres, new rear shocks, new muffler, rebuilt front forks, a bit of engine work but it's a bit smokey so apparently needs a new seal. He's got a whole spare RL in the shed he's slowly rebuilding too! I will have a video up in a day or two of the SQTA division 4 line which andy rode. Keep an eye out on my youtube channel for when it goes up. cheers

g'day all, I'm new to the trials thing and have just picked up an RL250 project. Old mate seems to go well on his in the vid you posted, do you know whether he's modified the frame as seems to be the norm for the RL ?

Samy, I was fortunate enough to ride Andy's RL at Benoble I think a week later and it's nice to ride.

Paulo, no I am pretty sure the frame has not been modified as it rides very similar to my 4 which have standard frame geometry. Is your RL project complete or are you chasing parts?

Had a little time this afternoon to reassemble the KT forks, There is now 48 less unassembled parts, don't want to count the total but I am hoping it is less than a 1000? Hoping to get dust seals from Kawasaki as mine fell apart when I tried to clean them.

G'day Greg, thanks for the reply. The main bits (apart from consumables) I'll be chasing are a decent seat base, muffler, and upper fork tubes. I can make the muffler, and even the seat base, but the fork tubes seem to be the hardest to find. Someone on another forum has mentioned tm250/ts250 forks as an donor option for the uppers, but I think they're longer and would have to be run up through the triples I'm assuming.

Having ridden the unmodified RL's I'd be interested on your take on the necessity of the frame mods that seem to be almost a given?

If I may jump in here with my 2 cents worth. It depends on how compedative you want to be. The steering gerometry mods help for tighter turns but stock works pretty good. The forks can be slipped up in the triple clamps for a bit of change. I have one with good stock shocks that work pretty well and one with Betors that is slightly better. The frame has a weak spot above the left foot peg where the gussets nearly come together. Most crack there. I weld the crack and weld the gussets together or just the gussets if not cracked. I have heard of cutting the frame where cracked and inserting a solid bar and welding up for an invisible repair. Bottom line, I suggest taking care of the crack and riding a few trials to see if you think further modifications are necessary or if you are having fun as it is.

Have had limited success using a smooth file and super glue on fork tube nicks.
