Re: Basket Cases
OK here's a trick question.
Which of these Yamaha steering stems is from a TY175?

Re: Basket Cases
I am guessing it was a rhetorical question, as they look to have the same diameter at the bearing surfaces, but taper at different points. My guess it that the bean counters instigated changing to the narrower profile...

Re: Basket Cases
Is the one with the slot in it for a registerable TY (steering lock) and the other for competition version?

Bingo Steve. Yes the skinny one is from a B model and the wider slotted one is from the JC model. Maybe Yamaha thought that the slot for the steering head lock weakened the stem too much to retain the original stem profile. Then again maybe they needed the bigger diameter for the locking pin to be able to reach.
The stem weights are:
TY175B - 522g
TY175JC - 539g

Re: Basket Cases
Another difference between the two TY175 models is the lower triple clamp as can be seen in this photo. The TY175JC has three threaded holes in the underside that are not in the TY175 item
TY175 B - 545g
TY175JC - 540g
TY175 B - 545g
TY175JC - 540g

Re: Basket Cases
Hi Everyone,
David, as always you are a wealth of information! The Whitlock 175 is shaping up to be a really nice bike, we need more dads like you! I wish I had a dad to prepare my bikes, that way I could get on with the part I like best, riding!
Have been riding Franken KT quite a bit and have it dialed in now, I can pretty much point it where I want to and I love the sound of the straight cut primary drive gears. At low revs when you apply a little load, it really whines until it is drowned out by the exhaust at higher revs. My first experience riding a KT was not very pleasant and it was quite some time ago. Everything felt foreign as the set up was all wrong, the handlebars were off a trail bike and were way too far back cramping a rather short bike even more. The tyres were rock hard and had way too much pressure exasperating the ploughing problem. But overall, I liked the power delivery which kept my interest for creating the Monster!
Quite a few people have helped me with parts, mechanical expertise and support, I would also like to thank Claudia & Lee Palmer at Crossroads Kawasaki in Grafton who have supplied me with brakeshoes and riding gear.
You can follow this link: http://www.crossroadsgrafton.com/Franken KT is having a summer holiday displayed on the mezzanine above the showroom until it's next trial in the new year. Both Claudia and Lee own trials bikes and assure me that they will be riding more and competing in the new year, which is great news to have another lady rider.

Hi Greg, I don't proclaim to know anything about the KT's infact I have never riden one. You say you have your bike dialed in. But my advice would be to soften the fornt fork springs they don't seem to have compressed much when you done that nose wheelie in the photo. Ha Ha
