If I am to learn this lesson I need to know every turn. Some of my truths I take from reflection and there is a problem in that.

It’s been awhile but I’m back just realised my project fits hear so this is it

The Story of the “twin cylinder trials bike”



I’m in a vintage club and it appears to me that it’s not really a vintage bike after the 60s. Hence the need for a vintage bike that can sit on 100 and go bush As usual a bike made itself known, Honda twin import it’s condition is low mileage, old in design, been sitting for along time under cover but with dust on it so it’s rusted.

A lot of cleaning pulled some panels off for inspection and wiping internally best I can as it has a layer of black grunge where it’s not splashed with oil. In those days you didn’t use multi grade oils with detergents.







The cleaning and preparation for assembly goes some thing like this:

Petrol scrub
Parts cleaner scrub
CT18 scrub and scrub and scrub tooth brush where needed
Rust treatment varies as the paint is not modern paint and can dissolve from contact with some common chemicals.

After being cleaned like I have a problem the open pores are coated with either Penetrol, lanolin, or ACF50. Everything is coated with something after cleaning.

I picked up this 1989 Enfield, 350 Bullet. It was 95% restored, so a bit of tinkering and now on NSW Historic Rego.
Might put the Greeves on the road this year, on Historic plates also. Have all parts to do so now. Also have a 77 Honda CJ250T on HP, next to my 77 S3 Land Rover.
Old man went to watch the Isle of Man TT in 77. it was the Island raffle prise for that year. He shipped it out to me from the UK a few years back. 12,000 miles on the clock, all original.

Yes where do the years go
The Greeves is really interesting in the way it’s constructed I’m a 70s/80s Jap bike kinda guy but this early stuff is really interesting to see how they designed around where they thought they had to go and cost. So much you can see carried into the future and so much faded away.

The aim is take photos as I dismantle it as a record for reassembling then take again after I have cleaned and serviced it.





The frame has a film over it but it’s still corroding so I clean it and coat it with a protectant I only use one of three.











I will keep the sprocket as it still has some meat on it.



Had to do some repairs to the generator lead wire sleeve for being had and cracked. Other than that it’s clean and protect. I can get it dirty in the future that’s just the bikes history continuing.

I take a particular interest in carbides and these were looking good





Inside was good little meaning full corrosion and the rest just needed cleaning.



If you clean well enough, polish with a tooth brush and detergent long enough you can polish the pearl out of them.



Full card kit including float bowls. The old parts are good spares.



There is a cover plate under the carbs





I guess that’s 60 years



The history of this bike is born from Mr Honda returning from Europe and knowing what he needed to make.
High on the list is no leaks so Orings are extensively used. This is how Honda entered the big boy European market. The response was “Jap crap it will neve last”

All I could do with the cover plate is clean de rust best I could. The paint is the delicate type so rust converter/ eater has to be applied carefully. Do the best I can light cut and polish add protective coating and enjoy the patina.

The wiring harness has additional wiring for indicators which the CL77’s don’t but do for the domestic market.
