Hand Protectors

Hi, I have a metal hand protector (bark buster) fitted to my sidecar throttle hand grip, thus far it has have been a finger saver on many occasions especially as this is only my second season riding "the dark side"
Q: I have been told that hand guards are illegal for Trials bikes is this so?
I cannot see anything trials specific in the MOMs that say that they can't be used I have been told that because they are not deemed as part of a trials bike that is the reason why they can't be used. My argument to this is nor are fork protectors or a vast array of after market parts.
I understand that there is a chance of breaking my wrist if I go over the bars but to me this is not as likely as smashing my pinky on a tree, which for a sidecar can be a common occurrence especially when you are learning.
Can anyone point out me to where in the MOMs hand protectors are deemed illegal for Trials.

Hi yamfan. I just read the 2017 MOMS and I could`nt find anything saying handguards are illegal on a sidecar used in trials. There is one section which has something about all parts must have homologation. That is under General Rules. 20.8. 20.8.1.1 to be specific. There is nothing in the sidecar rules though. Graham.

Thanks Graham, your interpretation of the rules is the same as mine.

Given that : (Homologation is the granting of approval by an official authority) I think the only way to ensure I can or can't use handprotectors is to contact MA.

That would be the safest way or just your State Controlling Body. They should be able to tell you.

Well said Al, I see you ride a Ducati, wonderful Trials bike.
