Inner tube puncture... repair or replacement?

Post by Joel11111 »

Hey guys, I'm dealing with the my son's first punctured tyre for his TRS ON-E 20". Bought it here: https://www.thehellteam.com/trs-one-e-kids-20
I have several questions, and thought I'd ask here since it's the weekend and everywhere is closed...

- He's only 6 and so his riding is pretty mild - no big jumps or anything just yet. That said, would it be safe to just repair the puncture with a regular puncture repair kit? Or should I replace the inner tube?

- Where do you guys get your inner tubes? Any good online stores? I'm on the Sunshine Coast and can't find any local stores. Would any motorcycle place be able to sort me out?

- I know it's a 19" rear rim, but have no other specs. Is any 19" inner tube suitable, or should I be on the look out for something more specific?

- I've never removed a dirt bike tyre of any kind before, but after watching some tutorials am confident enough. My only uncertainty is whether it's necessary to use a torque wrench (which I do not own) to tighten the wheel to a certain spec, or is it okay to just use my best judgement to get everything nice and tight?

Thanks so much! My son and I will really appreciate any help! :)

Whether you can fix it with a patch or not depends on what the hole is like. If it has ripped at the valve stem then you'll need a new tube. If its just from a thorn you can pull out the thorn from the tyre and fix the tube with a patch. Bicycle tube and car tube patches work on motorbike tubes.
Motorbike shop, bicycle shop or lawnmower shop are all places that could either replace the tube or patch it for you.
If you are unsure how tight to do up the axle nut, I suggest noting how tight it is to undo and that will be a good guide.
As for the size of the tube to get, have a look at what is written on the side of the tyre. On wheels like what's on your bike, the sizing system is not the same as for full sized motorbikes. On full sized bikes, the nominal tyre size is the inside diameter of the tyre. My understanding of bicycle type tyre sizing (like your tyre), the nominal tyre size is the outside diameter of the tyre. This means if you buy a 19" motorcycle tube it will be too big for your 19" Trial REBEL tyre.
The Hell Team (Sydney) and Revolution Trials (Brisbane) will be able to help with anything about your bike.
relax, nothing is under control

Great, thanks! Just curious why that size when the tyre itself says 20x3.00?

Tubes tend to cover a wide range of tyre sizes as they expand a lot when aired up. Less chance of punctures than a tube that doesn't have to blow up much and can "pucker up" inside the tyre.
