Yamaha 74 TY250a gearbox oil capacity/oil brand advice

Post by Sharkie86 »

Hi,
Just interested in finding out gearbox oil recommendations for my recently purchased 74 ty250a.

-Is it 1Ltr the amount of gearbox oil recommended when changing it?

-What brand of gearbox oil do you recommend using?

I was looking at possibly getting the 10w40 Penrite MC go
from Supercheap auto on central coast nsw.

-I ride probably three hrs a month on the TY, slow speed trials stuff out the front of my place not too harder work for it, I was looking at changing the gearbox oil yearly to keep it fresh would this be ok for amount of riding I do?

Regards

I use ATF ( Ford ) in mine. When I change the oil, I drain and let the bike on a stand overnight than fill with fresh ATF run for a couple of hours than repeat The oil change. Maybe it's overkill but I had good result.

Yes Penrite MC GO 10W40 motorcycle gearbox oil is a good choice and it's what I use.
Yes annual replacement is about right for that amount of riding. Oil takes in atmospheric moisture so even if not ridden at all, annual changing is a good idea. If you were to ride in deep water and some water got into the oil, it should be replaced at the first opportunity. If you were to ride it a lot more frequently, you might find the oil gets a bit dirty (from clutch use).
On the TY250 you can inspect the oil condition by looking at the dipstick after a ride.
There's lots of other oils that will also work well in a TY250 gearbox and clutch.
The types I would suggest not using are:
(a) car engine oil, because some car engine oils have friction modifiers that can make the clutch slip.
(b) extreme pressure (EP) (hypoid) diff oil, which can also cause the clutch to slip.
relax, nothing is under control
