Im looking to get a trials bike that I can putter up to the local shops in sydney on saturday and also do some mellow trials riding at a friends farm.....on sundays

I notice that somevery old ty yamahas seem to be able to be registered.

Does any now what models of trials bikes can be regsitere in nsw....and what is the latest model you can register? ....eg 86 yamaha??

I saw a TY250a being ridden at the Scorpa ride day last month at Pacific Park with a rego plate. The rider was from Denman Club. He said he had the lights etc at home and that's all you need to register it in NSW. Check with the RTA though...

Some models of the monoshock TY250 can be registered if it is fitted with a compliance plate. None of the bikes imported fro the last 15 years have been complianced so would be unregistrable.

The Veteran, Vintage & Classic M'cycle Club (ACT) has recently negotiated with our local government for "Unregistered Vehicle Permits" which allow a m'cycle to be used between 7am & 7pm.....(can't go outside ACT). Great bikes like horizontal twin - Douglas, 500 AJS's, 350/500 Aerial, & other classic singles come into this category.....(but you're probably after something a little more curent....) and your in NSW....
So if you were riding a classic in the ACT, we could cater for you...otherwise, give your RTA & 'Transport compliance guru's a call (or email)....
Whatever's said in this forum may not be worth the email its printed on if you took our word as Gospel & took your bike on the street....

Yes it was 1976 that ADR plates were first fitted to bikes in Australia. 1975 and earlier model bikes can be road registered without an ADR compliance plate. This means that TY250A and TY250B models are fine. Later TYs need to be the compliance models ie TY175JC and the steel tank TY250 monoshock model.

This is interesting.

If a bike has a VIN number does that mean you can put on some lights and get Rego?

A VIN is to identify the vehicle
VIN = VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER

An ADR compliance plate is to indicate a vehicle complies with Australian design regulations
ADR = AUSTRALIAN DESIGN REGULATIONS
