Got the new (old) bike home last night. Finally got it bum started (no kick start) today, pretty cold natured at first, first time on the pegs in about 30 years. Boy, was it fun!! Big, big grin!!
Now the questions -
Talked to local Yamaha dealer today about kisckstarter parts - says he can't get them! Any good soruces for TY 175 engine parts?
I would guess most members of this forum do their own maintenance. However, can anyone recommend an experienced TY mechanic in Soutweast Queensland?
The engine number begins with "525", my thoughts are to find DT 175 bottom end and use the kickstart parts IF they will fit. I would rather do my self educating on a spare bottom end before tearing into my bike that is somewhat rideable!!
A response to my previous post indicates that DT 175 parts might work if each engine is the same model (i.e A,B,C etc).
How can I identify the model?
I do not have service manual. yet! What is the gear box capacity and what type oil do you recommend?
Thanks!!!!

Kickstart levers and knuckles should be available from Yamaha dealers.
Kickstart shafts are in short supply but are available from the UK for about $110. Link at bottom for supplier.
Prefix 525 means it is a B, C or mechanically the same as a B or C model. B and C models are common in Australia. The other common Australian model was the JC which has many minor differences and is identified by having prefix 1N4.
Look closely at the clutch casing near the dipstick knob and you will see the oil quantity written there. I think it is 650ml from memory.
Use two stroke motorcycle gearbox oil in your gearbox. There are many brands. Castrol MTX is widely available. Bike shops usually sell it. The main oil type to avoid is oil intended for manual car gearboxes as it contains an additive to protect the synchro rings but will make your clutch slip if you use it ie stay away from car gearbox oil.
A good place to buy your kickstart shaft is John Canes eBay shop. Here is the link:

As you will see they have many of the hard to get bits for TYs available. I usually try the local Yamaha dealer first then if no luck, get it from John Cane. It pays to order a few things at a time and save postage.
Another good site for TY twinshock parts is:

Congrats to tjw for getting the bike.
I just picked up one myself last night - a TY175 also! (525 - B or C)
I will be picking these posts also for any info, as I have a few questions of my own before I lay my hands on a manual. My kickstart lever is cracked, and the weld up job cracked again, so will look for a new one.
The bike wasnt running, has spark, but no fuel. I havent time just yet to play with it.
My questions - what is the points gap? What is the timing set at? (this will require the car battery to supply the timing gun). Will have more later as time goes by.

I would rather push my twinshock than ride a modern!

Well done on getting the bike. I did the same thing myself about half a year ago with the same type of bike.
I never thought to ask about oil capacity and spent way too long putting in a little bit at a time till it showed on the dipstick. I don't have an accurate measurement but it was a bit over half a litre, so David's memory must be pretty good. And the type of oil I used was recomended by my local Yamaha dealer: Motul Transoil 10W30. It seems to work OK for me.
And for subanator too,
I got a new kickstart lever assembly from my local Yamaha dealer just a couple of months ago. It took a couple of days for them to get it in. I can't remember the price but I thought it was reasonable at the time.
Sorry I cant help you with the gap or timing, I haven't had to deal with that myself yet.
