restoreing old bikes and new parts available.

Post by restoremaz »

I am about a third of the way through restoreing my TY(will post photos soon)

I am realy enjoying restoreing it, and have had no problems buying parts for it, as yamaha has everything for them i ask for.

After i finish this bike, i would like to do another, possibly a bultaco,or montessa, whatever i can get my hands on.

My question is, how would one go about finding parts for old bultacos and montessas? im assuming theres no sydney dealers for these old models?

Plastics and paint work are not a problem as im a panel beater/spray painter, but the bits like gaskets, bushes, seels and engine parts are what im concerned about.
any experiance here on restoreing these models?

The popular models of the Spanish bikes are no problem for parts from specialist suppliers around the world. The common Spanish brands of the 1970s (Bultaco, OSSA and Montesa) are the easiest to get parts for (better than Yamaha generally). If you go for an obscure model from those brands you will need to search harder. Bultaco is the easiest to find parts of the Spanish brands with two very good suppliers in Australia and others in the US, Spain and the UK.
Don Newell in Brisbane and Peter Schoene (Bultaco Parts Australia) in Victoria are the best Australian Bultaco parts people.
I've had most success with Jared Bates (South West Montesa) in the US for 1970s Montesa parts and with Keith Lynas in the US for OSSA parts but there are many others besides these.
Have a look at the ads in VMX magazine or Classic Dirt Bike magazine and you will get the idea. Some of the UK suppliers of 1970s Spanish bike parts have eBay shops.
If you can read or speak Spanish, there are some good Spanish bike parts suppliers there too (not surprising really). The Spaniards are also into making replicas of the commonly required parts that have become otherwise unobtainable - like exhaust systems, mudguards, sidecovers, air filter boxes, rubber parts and fuel tanks. You can source these replica parts yourself or through the brand specialist importers. This is why the Spanish bikes are easier to get parts for than Yamaha. Yes you can get replacement fuel tanks, exhausts etc for Yamahas that are servicable but they don't look like the original Yamaha items.

I agree with David - but be aware if you go OSSA becaues some bits are hard to get hold of for the 'gripper' models.

Thats a good point Paul. Maybe I should list the common models that are the easiest to get parts for?

Bultaco
Any 5 speed Sherpa T model so that is 1967 to 1980.
Not M199B (6 speed 1981) and not M10 (4 speed 1964/66).

Montesa Cota
247 Mk 2 and 3 and Ulf Karlson replica
123 all
172 all
348 all
349 till 1981 (white tank model)
Nothing after 1981

OSSA
MAR 250 Mk1 1972 and Mk 2 1974-1975, Explorer 250 1974/76, MAR 350 1976-1977?
Not Gripper models

Here is a brochure shot of an OSSA TR80 (Gripper). There aren't many around in OZ as they weren't sold new here. Robert Marsden imported a second hand 250 many years ago from the UK and I think he sold it to someone in Tassie.
