I'm in a highly emotional bind.
the 1976 Sherpa T250 I have been thrashing and neglecting and dropping onto rocks etc.. but also loving since 1993.... has THE WRONG ENGINE.
I never thought to look cos it started and went over stuff real nice! But then I got bit by the resto bug, and Don Newall tells me you got to have matching engine no's. Love Don!
ANYWAY.....Not only do the serial numbers not match, but the engine is COMPLETELY the wrong type. Which is why it has the HUGE, welded rear sprocket on a non Bultaco rear wheel. It has a wierd engine serial starting with 81.000.001 from an Elmontadero... whatever the Hell that is!!!!
I need a 76 or later Sherpa engine with no bike. Because I love my Bully, but you can hear that piston slapping in the bore from Fiji and there's so many chunks of alloy missing from the casing I have to use wood screws to hold the clutch cover on.
So if you are in Brisbane, and have a spare motor..... In complete condition, drop me a line here or call me on 0418747371. I have MONEY to give you for a motor.

There are lots of Bultacos running around with the "wrong" motor in them. You're not Robinson Crusoe.
One way you may be able to make up a motor that looks like a 1976 Sherpa T 250 is to use the bottom end you have got already and getting the right type cylinder and head and maybe engine covers if they are the wrong looking shape.
Unless you get the engine cases with the exact same number as the frame, it will never have the full appeal of a "matching numbers" bike to people who value that sort of thing.
It may pay to say what the frame number is just in case someone has the original engine cases lying around.
Did you know you may be able to get a 325cc motor that would also look right in your 1976 Sherpa T? They are probably more common (easier to find) than the 238cc models.
Another thing that may help is to post a photo of the motor that is in the bike in case some Bultaco nut wants to do a swap with you??

I am not so fussed about the serial numbers. Just need a genuine trials transmission.
And I am looking at sticking the bigger 325 engine in as you say. I will take some pics just so everyone can see what a piece of junk the Apple of my eye is and how far down the road to ruin a cycle can go and still be fun to ride.
It was in a box when I bought it in 1992 and reassembly was nothing like any of the TY's I'd had before.... I was like, why do you have to get off it to kick it over and the foot controls are on back to front!!!!!!!......
I only got the manual for it last year and thought.... OH SO that's why the clutch doesn't work and I always thought it had a bent crank...... just that the plates were out of whack!
