Trials misconceptions

Post by Scorps »

Howdy Y'all,

In a recent post I came across what I believe to be an old wives tail:
Compressing forks while tying down WILL ruin fork seals.

Now I don't believe this to be true (willing to do the calcs for the seriously interested - no piss takers though, I'm a busy man).

I can also think of the following common misconceptions:
A big bore bike will make me ride better (excludes A grade/Experts)
Siliconing rear wheel rim tap will stop air leaking through spokes
Upping suspension preload will make springs stiffer (therefore better for big units like myself apperently)
Four strokes are AWESOME for trials (compared to 2strokes) :P

Has anyone got any others they'd like to add?

Cheers,

Scorps

Good topic Scorps. How about these:

- The best Trials bike for everyone to ride is the brand that is winning the World Trials Championship.

- I should get a 4 stroke trials bike because it will require less maintenance than a 2 stroke.

I'm sure there are more
relax, nothing is under control

I find all of this extremely worrying !!!!!!!!

If I got a bigger bike, and just say it was a four stroke, and the brand that currently holds the world championship,
and then I tweeked the suspension preload to the max, because I'm not exactly a lightweight, and of course never compressed the front suspension when tying it down .........

What else could I use as an excuse for my crappy talentless riding ability???????

Oh, and by the way Scorps, if you don't play a U2 album at all it sounds even better still.

How about: "Riding a drum-braked, cable-clutched, twin-shocked, air-cooled, turning circle like the Queen Mary, under-powered old bessie as a beginner will make you a better rider". :D

Ouch !!   But I do ride a drum-braked, cabled-clutched, twin-shocked, air-cooled.....etc. etc.  and it didn't make me a good rider.  It just made me work hard at it and have heaps of fun.    As I said earlier........ "What else could I use as an excuse for my crappy, talentless riding ability?"

Nothing personal. Just stating a trials misconception that I've heard.
Riding a disc-braked, water-cooled, hydraulic-clutched newbie doesn't make you a good rider either.

Merry Xmas.

mmm let me see..I have owned my TY250a for nearly 20 years and I use it for everything, trails, trials etc and the repair bill has been very minimal. It's a keeper. I can handle a couple of new tyres in that time,as well as a set of bars. With the new bikes, new brake pads every time you ride. More changes to the suspension than I changed my kids nappies every time you ride.
What for? We all are riding for fun(well I do) and why wipe yourself out trying out some new trick when you just stay to your line.
I like the new bikes, they just cost too much to maintain for the same fun of the older bikes... :D
Feet up, as always!

Howdy Y'all,

I'll be honest and say the best trials misconception I hear is:

"Scorps is an extremely talented trials rider and a very sexy beast to boot"....

But I'll manage to live with it.

We all thought that was fact.
