TY175 shocks-repair/replacement?

Post by markrossetto »

I have recently purchased a TY175 to cleanup and then ride. The rear shocks have no dampening and I was wondering if anyone has attempted to repair them. If so could you please let me know how you went. I have attempted to refill the oil through the bore end but it doesn't want to pass through the piston (I assume the valve arrangement must be seized). Before I go any further I thought I would see if anyone has been down this track before.

My second option appears to be getting some replacement shocks. Can anyone advice on what type and where from. An aussie supplier would be great... but otherwise any adivse would be great.

Thanks, Mark.

If there is no damping then there is probably no oil. If there is no oil, then it has probably leaked out. If oil has leaked out before, it will leak out again. You haven't said what sort of shockies you are working on so it is difficult to help any more.
It is usually not economical to re-seal the sort of shockies that came new on TY175s unless you are able to do all the work yourself. Even if you do they are easily bent (thin shafts).
What shockies to recommend depends on your expectations and budget. Second hand TS185ER shockies are probably at one end of the performance/cost spectrum and Falcons, NJB Trickshox, Ohlins and a few others at the other end and there are a few in between.
Falcons and Betors are available from Australian suppliers (Don Newell Motorcycles Brisbane and Bultaco Parts Australia in Victoria). Prices range from $50 to $1000.
If you provide info about your riding level and performance expectations you will probably get some specific recommendations.

Appreciate the reply thanks.

The shocks are the originals at the moment...
But I think I'll begin to search for some aftermarket replacements. I am new to trials, from enduro (looking for some new skills), so as long as they are better than what the originals (in new condition) would do I would be happy. Something middle of the range.

Thanks for the suppliers, I will get in contact with them.

Mark.
