Who can guess what JAFTY stands for?? Anyway, here's my story.

I got busy over the weekend getting the ute ready for the season, so didn't post earlier. So, after fighting with picture file sizes for a little while now.... I finally have a couple attached, probably too small though??

Typically, I don't have a before shot! But it was pretty bad. It had been painted with a paint brush!! It had a lovely green tank, yellow frame and an engine with a combination of the two (runs, brush marks etc). I bought it knowing I might have a few problems but was keen to ride and it was conveinient. What i didn't know was how many problems it did have under all that paint and the problems I would have sourcing a fix and parts.

Ok, the first 2 shots are of the frame after the repairs and before powder coat and my hand made muffler. All of the mods I have carried out have been on a need to do basis ie. the pegs where worn out, bent etc. So I fixed them and moved them in the process. Keeping within the spirit of twin shock, in my opinion. Engine mounts where broken and welded on radially to the frame, so I cut them off and did it right (axially). The shock pivots where bent and at different lenghts, the snail cam pins where worn, so I fixed them all with s/steel fixings.

The 3rd pic is of it half done. I am sure you have all seen TY's, so I will spare you the repetition. I got all excited when it was finished and got it all dirty, so no finished pic as yet. I have a few hand made fibreglass components that may be interesting.

Nice work on the repairs on your JAFTY and of course it reminded me of another story.
The same TY250B I wrote about with the push-till-it-stops bog repair on the mag cover had been ridden for quite some time with all three engine mount bolts loose and with no bashplate. Needless to say the holes in the engine cases were a bit elongated. At least the mounts on the frame were still intact. I can only imagine what your TY must have been treated like to have broken the mounts off the frame.
Another thing on that same bike that was a bit out of the ordinary was that it came fitted with (35mm) Bultaco Matador forks fitted in the (34mm) Yamaha fork clamps, and Yamaha front wheel. The remains of the Yamaha forks came with the bike and one slider had suffered a huge blow to about where the seal would normally be housed, which explained the Bultaco forks being on it. The other Yamaha fork leg had a rusty tube but was otherwise OK.
OK how do you think that the 35mm fork tubes had been fitted into holes 1 mm smaller? Someone had got to it with a round file and done it all by eye and not very well. The gaps left after the Bultaco tubes were in place had been filled with something that looked like red Loctite. If the alignment of the holes ended up a little bit out of parallel, it probably didn't matter much because one of the Bultaco fork tubes had a severe curve in it. As usual with abused Bultaco sliders, one of the axle clamps had been broken by over-tightening and the pieces had been "welded" back together.
I've just remembered more things about that bike but am saving them.
Just in case anyone is wondering why I bought such a wreck, it was in 1999 (before the widespread use of the internet for finding parts), and I had been having all sorts of grief finding TY parts so when a "whole" TY250 was for sale 400km away, I was quite happy to drive 5 hours there and 5 hours back in the pouring rain with my wife and new-born baby to have a look at it. And believe it or not, that bike has provided quite a few useful parts since then.

So my limit is 3 pics then. The first pic is of a wiseco RL piston and my original. With a little aid from a drill and a burr, I have 2 TY pistons. I ordered the TY piston from wiseco but returned it as it suits DT's better then TY's (more top end from bigger skirt cutaway). The RL piston was like a blank canvas...... A big thankyou to Brad from partsmonster.com.au He sourced all of my 'unavailable' parts and was happy to go along for the ride.

More frame pics and my falcon shocks :) and a gold iris chain too. I had more pics of the engine but they wouldn't fit. Maybe later.

There she is, naked...... Have the pod fitted (against all advice, thats why I perservered!) and my hand made fibreglass number plate. More glass bits to come. A new dunlop on the front and IRC on the rear. Nearly ready, a little jetting to do.

It's great to hear that an RL250 piston fits the TY250. RL pistons also fit KT250s but require a spacer under the barrel for the KT motor to get the piston to the right height in the barrel. My KT has a Honda Elsinore CR250 piston in it, because for the CR piston you don't need a barrel spacer.
I think your pod filter will be fine on the TY because it is a reed valve motor so wont spit much fuel back out the inlet.
I reckon the Wiseco piston would have been fine though because the skirt length, cutaway shape and hole placement on the back of Yamaha pistons have no effect on the inlet port timing due to the reed induction.

Nice effort in getting the TY back to running condition, not sure what to make of the multi colours, but its your bike and individual tastes make them our own.

This is from another trials site, all is explained here and pretty much it all applies, only that you would need to resize the pic when uploading to the host site so that its not huge in the post. 600 x 480 is a good size.

Like to see the pics of the hand made muffler too.

But then again it could be a Joyously Almost Finalised TY (I would have used finished, but David beat me to it.)
