Hi,
Help please!
What's the best way to replace hand grips?
I have just discovered the 'wrong way'.... so now I have a Beta with one nicely glued on new left hand grip & a bare throttle tube on the other with a destroyed grip in peices on the garage floor....
Any help?
Thanks,
Cameron J

Hi There,
Did you realise the grips come in two sizes, one having a larger internal diameter than the other. The throttle side grip is larger. Use grip glue, available from the bike shop, work quickly so the glue allows you to slide the grip on. If the glue becomes tacky you will get into trouble. If the grip gets an air lock in the end stopping you from sliding it on, pin prick it to allow the air to escape.

Another excellent method is a couple of quick squirts of aerosol spray paint in the grip, slide it on, let dry. Holds the grip really well but can be removed with a good squirt of air from an air compressor pistol poked up the inside of the grip when ready for a new set. Some grip glues work TOO WELL, and when it is time to change grips you end up with the razor blade and thousands of small strips of rubber all over the floor!
We have good S3 grip glue in stock for a couple of bucks, or raid the garage for a spray can.

Further on the aerosol treatment, i usually use hair spray. I find that works well too, makes it easy enough to get off at the end and tends to help them stick. I also run a bit of thin wire around the inside of the left grip just to make sure it stays still.
Have fun getting those grips off!

Hi Cameron J
I change my grips fairly regularly and this method works for me...
Firstly, if your grip doesn’t have a hole in end, drill one in – it helps relieve the pressure as you push the grip on.
If you’re using bar ends don’t cut the end off grip till you’ve finished, the extra rubber helps when pushing the grip. BTW the regs have changed, you don’t have to fit bar ends any more, the end simply needs to covered, but bar ends do help protect the grip.
Secondly, apply the grip glue to the inside of the grip not to the bars, that way you don’t end up with great globs of glue all over the bars. I agree with Paul A, the S3 glue is good cos lubricates and it doesn’t set too quickly but the spray paint works too.
Finally, it’s a really good idea to 'tie wire' the grips to the bar after the glue sets - one at each end and one in the middle. Most grips are soft enough that the wire and the twist dig into the grip and sit below the surface but make sure you position the wire twist where it won’t catch on your finger. Grab the grip in your normal riding position and you’ll find a gap between the finger tips and the palm of your hand – that’s a good spot.
Hope this helps mate.

Yeah................Motostar does seem to know just a little bit too much about the properties of hair spray............ he does ride a Sherco after all, which immediately makes him of questionable character
Hey Cameron When are you going to peel off some more photos????
