Creature,
Get in touch with a Beta dealer, but I think the heat range on your plug is too cold.
Gas Gas bikes run a 5 heat range plug & I've got a feeling that Beta's should have a 6.
The higher number on an NGK plug the Colder is it's heat range.
MX bikes run 9 or 10s as heat ranges.

Team Kaos in NSW should be able to help you.

Best of luck,
Gary B. from Wollongong MCC.

Hey mate,

My 03 Beta runs well on bosch plugs from any supercheap or similar car store, though I can't remember what the code is... however, for some weird reason I remember the NGK code, BPR6ES was the plug I went to buy, and they just give you the bosch equivilent, I get the bosch because the tip screws off, not sure if your spark plug lead will be the same as mine, but I need to remove the little cap to expose the thread...

Good luck!

Creature,

Welcome to the world of trials.... and the world of Betas.
I have a 2001 Beta REV-3 250 and had similar starting (and running) problems with it last year.
A few points
1. PLUGS
Try the NGK BP5ES (mine works on similar cheapy versions from SuperCheap auto)
If problem persists, read on:
2. TIMING:
Check ignition timing (as per diagram) see: http://www.betatrialuk.com/content/view/72/51/
Timing Alignment.jpg

3. STATOR COIL (item 1 in image)
I have replaced my Stator - apparently the winding wraps on coils deteriorate over time and need replacing. Best off ordering a replacement Reconditioned stator from Kal at KD Mototrials
4. CDI UNIT (item 3 in image)
I have replaced the CDI unit as well - mine was old and tired.
5. Spark plug COIL (item 2 in image)
Has been replaced.

Before these changes my bike was very difficult to start and would stall when idling (even when warm) - now it is like a different machine, starts first kick (2nd when cold) and idles well. Bike mechanic told me it had a very weak spark before replacing all these items.
Other unrelated items you might want to check:
1. Carburettors have a habit of flooding easily - there is a carb mod you can do to help fix this (can be found online).
2. Get the rear shock serviced before it's too late! Mine blew up on me and it wasn't pretty - destroyed itself internally so had to be replaced. To replace with a suitable 2000-2001 model "piggy back" shock is nearly impossible (and very expensive). Good news is a 2002+ model shock will work if mounted correctly (I ended up importing a reconditioned unit from Beta UK).

All in all it's a much better bike than when I bought it.
Hope this helps!

Regards,

Cameron J

The standard plug is NGK BP7ES but most Clubman and C Grade riders use BP5ES or BP6ES

My daughter needs a 5 as she does not rev the bike enough to keep a 7 clean.

ok cheers for all ur help but the problem is not fouling of the plug it burns clean maybe lean if anything but the problem is once its hot and you turn it off or stall it the bike will not start until u put a cold plug in it, well thats the only common thing i can find that makes it start. so as soon as it stops i take the plug out put a spare in and away it goes. bike runs perfect wen going just does not like to start on a warm plug????? i just want to make sure i know wat the problem is before i go get my stator rewound as it seems to be a heat related problem?
