When I was younger I did use my TY250 as a make shift chain saw to rip off a branch from a tree that was scratching my car going into the carport.
I was living in Mareeba in bank quarters so didn't have a saw or anything. Worked a treat with two of us sitting on the bike for some weight and a nice strong rope. With my poor riding skills I was also known to dig some trenches going up creek banks (a no no in this day and age
) so I can understand the CAT analogy.

That YZ125C/X fuel tank really looks the goods on the TY - probably even better than the standard A model tank - which is pretty stylish too.
About the black, cylindrical thingy - I reckon it is some Caterpillar device like an hour meter or maybe even a voltmeter - something that is normally meant to be fitted into a panel. It's too big to be a bicycle electronic speedo.
I'd be a bit worried about riding off road with that headlight sticking up there - right where important body bits go when riding obstacles - although the handlebar brace sticks up pretty high too.

the yz125x/c tank does look good, very hard to get nowdays! [ just ask anyone building a HL replica] ..my guess is an hour meter too! driven off the oil pump looks like...

I had to look again to see myself, at first I thought "tacho" as the DT175 is driven from there, but zooming into the image I can see wiring. Hmmmm? Hourmeter or tacho? Both can be driven off the coil input. A bit vulnerable like the light, also possible a Cat part too.
Thing is, does the owner, say if he works in the earth moving or repairs them, want to be reminded of work every time he goes for a ride on the weekend?

Maybe he likes to keep a track of just how many hours he gets to enjoy his riding, or maybe his wife put it there so she knows what hours to charge out come home duties time !
