I have started to do a bit of work on the TY250B that my brother gave me for my birthday a few years ago. He had bought it new in 1975 and had finally gotten sick of moving around the country every time he moved for work.

Anyway;

I can remember that back in the days of old, there were a lot of TY250's that had there rear shock mounts moved forward/lower by about 1". Is it worth doing this on a TY nowdays?

I have looked at a few of the other posts regarding TY250's and it seems that lowering the footpegs is a common modification. What is the reason behind lowering the pegs and is it worth doing if you are not going to be making a serious attempt at winning any chamionships. I might get to ride the TY in two trials a years, but only if the daughter won't passenger for me on the Bully outfit.

Moving the shock mounts can be used to raise the bike and/or increase the rear end suspension travel. The reasons for making a mod like that nowadays are no different to back in the 1970s, but modern shockies can make the rear end work quite well without moving the mounts. Good quality modern trials shockies have more shaft travel and much better damping than anything available in the 1970s.
Lowering the footpegs can help the ergonomics for taller riders because modern bars are lower rise than what was available in the 1970s. For shorter riders, lowering the pegs can cause bum/seat clearance issues.
Lowering the pegs also lowers the centre of gravity of the bike, making stationary balancing easier if the rider is into that sort of thing. It also makes it easier to hit your feet on things you pass.

Thanks for that David, I might just go for a slightly overlength set of shocks and leave the mounting positions as they are. The same with the footpegs, I even though I am 6'4" tall, I have enough problems bashing my size 13's into things without making them closer to the ground. If there was some real benefit to be gained by lowering them I would have given it a try.

I'm 6 4 also and hear what Dave is saying about modern bars being lower than the old renthals.....if you can find an old 8 inch high one , go for it ....if you find two I'll buy the other one.

Hi CJ i've just purchased some Sammy Miller replacement pegs for my TY175 which lowered the pegs 1inch down and 1 inch further back and for a 6ft 2in rider like myself they do make life a lot easyer. I now can stand more comfortably on the bike instead of feeling like a Gnat looking for a place to land..............

Price was around $90 delivered which isn't too bad for a new set of full width pegs and with modern mounts it also means you can update to any of the modern pegs available if the need suits you.

Service was great too, it took 4 days to get here from the mother land

Oh!! and they do TY250 pegs too!!
