I have a TY175 which is in excellent original condition with a very quiet engine. The only problem is that the exhaust seems clogged with carbon. I removed the final silencer and dismantled and it was badly oiled up and almost blocked so I suspect the main pipe is as well. Anyone offer suggestions or methods for cleaning they have successfully used?

I know this problem would have been discussed many time on this forum but I can not find them .

Is the old burn out method OK. I am worried that the pipe has baffles etc that will be destroyed completely . The burn out method works fine with MX chanbers etc but baffles and silencer internals do not usually fare so well.

Anyone know of a chemical method?

Scrivo, bike shops use a chemical but that is really only needed for aluminium exhausts that would melt if they were burned out and also for use in neighbourhoods that are sensitive to foul smelling smoke.
The front pipe from a TY175 will burn out a treat. The "chamber" section is double skin construction with the inner skin being perforated steel and no baffles. I cleaned out one of those babies a while back with er.... "thermal assistance" and it weighed 600grams less afterwards.

Gday, many engine reconditioners use a "Hot Tank" chemical cleaning bath for steels, iron etc that will do the job. You will need to repaint afterwards, and make sure you remove O rings etc before dipping. Its easier too than burning if the option is available near you.

Hi alot of us 2 strokers in the uk use costic soader. plug one end off your pipe mix the stuff up & poor it in the open end let it get to its optimun temp then let it sit in the pip for a few hours then empty the stuff away.i used this method on a road bike that would only do a speed of 40mph after treatment! it then did 75mph so it sertenly worked for me.and cost only £3.50 im on with a rebuild of a ty 175 and i cleand the pipe the same way and when i ran the bike up she sounded has it should. Any hardware store should have it in stock. To be ( SAFE ) if you use this method read the safety on the (can/tub) first as it burns the hell out of your hands. the can will not tell you how to clean out your pipe as its for other cleaning / drains and stuff/ but should do the job remove any rubber or the costic will remove it for you
