What Shocks for a TY250B

Post by colin jay »

I am currently rebuilding my TY250B and present plan is to keep the bike reasonably stock as far as running gear is concerned. I will probably only ride the bike once or twice a year in some of the trials here in SA, and a bit of practice at home. However, I do need to fit new shocks to it, the current Mulhollands were fitted back in the 70's when I was riding it in "C" grade and are starting to show their age. I have thought about going 25 -30mm overlength with the shocks, but haven't made up my mind.

So, the questions are;

1. What brand of shocks would be best suited for a TY250B, that will be ridden in some low level, club C grade / twinshock events? (And who sells them here in Aust?)

2. Should I stick with the std shock length, or should I fit a pair that are slightly overlength?

This rebuild is being done on a bit of a budget, so I don't want to spend the earth on the best shocks in the world.

If you don't want to do any mods then you are probably limited to just over 340mm length shocks due to the stand bracket hitting the brake pedal up stop. 340mm is a bit longer than standard.
I reckon TY250 steering is perfect with 340mm long 4" travel shocks with preload set at 50% sag with rider aboard.
You should have an idea of what you like as far as shockie length goes from your Mullhollands.
The Sammy Miller Products Betors set up for trials or Falcon Trials Classic shocks would give good performance. I don't know of any cheap shocks that would work better than Mullhollands.
Don Newell in Brisbane usually keeps Falcons in stock.
relax, nothing is under control

TYTrials in the UK can ship you a pair of 340mm Betors with 40/50 or 60lb springs for around $AUD185 at the moment.

You will not beat that price for quality shocks in Australia.

Thanks for the info David. The bike has not run in at least 25 years, and it is well over 30 years since I last rode it in a competetive section, so the actually performance/handling with the existing Mulholands is a total unknown to me.

I will have to take the stand bracket/brake pedal stop relationship into acount when I make up the new bracket for the sidestand (the original one has broken off of the swingarm and I have just sourced a replacement stand).

I will give Don Newell a try for some 340mm Falcons, as I like to do as much business in country as possible.

Thanks, Colin

Its all quite noble to support the local guys Colin and Don's a great bloke to deal with but I can think of at least a dozen item's the $200 price difference between here and the UK delivered price can be used for!!
