Help please - no spark and the 1st CQ ride Sunday

Hi All,
I have a lost spark from my SWM TL320.
When it first happened I assumed it was the hi tension lead which I shortened and re attached to standard spark plug cap.
This worked on several occasions.

Last time it happened I replaced with new cap - lo cost non standard replacement - manual says replace standard cap anyway. This worked and I test rode it tonight ran well for 3 minutes until ran into long wet grass and it stopped again.

I then tried a new plug after replacing lead and the spark wasn't there then it came back in???

Rode it for a minute back into the long grass died again.

Can coils go like that ...i always thought they just stopped.

Re tightened earth....nothing.

it has the standard kill button...have these been a problem?
Can anybody help?

Hi,
Disconnected kill switch and drenched the electrics in CRC.....still nothing.

Try a new condensor, they are reasonably cheap to purchase and there's are pretty good chance thats the problem

Gday, yes worth trying a condenser. It does sound like a failing source coil (the one under the flywheel) however. They can do this. The best test is using a voltmeter set to AC volts, 400v range and testing the output to the coil cold and then again when it stops. You should see around 100 volts when kicking. No output suggests a shorted source coil or broken wiring in between, although it sounds heat related if it runs for a few minutes, stops and cools, and then runs again etc.

Hi, I recently had a similar problem with my SWM after I washed it, it ran for a short while then just stopped. It also didn't have a spark, I tried a new plug & diconnected the kill switch but still no spark, next I took the flywheel cover off to fine quite a bit of moisture in there so I blew all the water out & the spark returned but only for a couple of kicks then it was gone again, repeated the procedure again with the same result, it wasn't until i cleaned the points twice that the spark finaly returned for good & it hasn't missed a beat since.

Hi Guys, thanks for the advice.

Yes after all that took off the flywheel cover, was kicking it over the spark started again and hasn't gone away after 1 hour test riding, three washes and a wet trial at Rocky.

Looks like this is a moisture issue with the points as David L suggested. So Im now religiously popping off the cover and letting it dry out with a bit off CRC to displace any moisture.

The good bit was it ran like a train at Rocky.....and a great ride put on by a very friendly club...well done guys and girls.
