Cota Shock Absorber Circlips

I am still very new to all this (despite 40 years biking) but my 76 Montesa Cota is very new experience for me. The first thing I learned about it was on the way home (I picked it up in Wauchope NSW and trailered to near Dorrigo about 2 hours drive) on the way the top left shock absorber mount came adrift - I got to Kempsey and discovered the entire mount is held on by a circlip (maybe common but new to me). I tied the shock back into position and next day fitted a new rubber mount into the shock with a new circlip. A few days later the other shock decided to jump off while I was test riding - luckily close to home. I replaced the shock rubbers and circlip but I have to say this arrangements looks decidedly fragile to me so I inserted a long narrow bolt and large washer through the shock mount just to act as a second level of protection.

I have seen Cota' pictured with what looks like standard round headed nuts and many with just circlips. Am I just unlucky both failed within days, are they a sturdy mounting or for mainly trail purposes ( no other trials riders around) am I correct to use a secondary bolt to support the shock in position.

Hi Keychange,
My 247 has one bolt and three circlips holding the shocks on, when I find the time I am going to replace all the circlips.
