"Brooweena has once again come and gone, our thanks must go to Jeff and his team, Noel and the property owners, who allow us to have such a large bonfire and access to some of the best sections one could wish for.
This was the 9th year that we have run Brooweena, only Jeff and Robin, Terry Telfer and Pat and myself have attended throughout that time, so I feel that I am qualified to say that Brooweena has changed over that period, with younger riders coming along and raising the bar.
The open sections this year really tested Mac and I, to the point that on Sunday we opted to ride the Clubman lines, however watching the likes of Stewart Platt, Jordan Smith, Frank van Heerden, Josiah Murphy and Ryan Mitchell tackling tight rocky downhill turns, with a No Stop rule in place made me wish I could peel some years off my age. Mark Reed, Greg Paton and Peter Casey continued in Open lines and completed the weekend without hurting themselves or their bikes, although Peter did come close to scratching his newly, David Lahey, painted tank. Standout performer at this level was Mark Casswell, who rode well above anything that I have seen him do to date, well done Mark. Jeff Eckert, on his beautifully prepared TL250, rode his usual clean self, when one thinks about the work that has gone into that bike, one wonders what pressure there is on Jeff to keep it upright.
In Clubman lines Mark Keenan, up from down south somewhere, showed just how competitive a TY 175 could be, he did not falter on any of the slippery climbs, but did admit that coming down them was a bit daunting. Nathan Haig and Jayden Daley were in amongst it all, and did not seem to be doing too much wrong. Peter Smith was having to come to terms with a completely different environment and bike, but was still enjoying himself, he had a go at the big rocky climb in section 7, and although he did foot, he got to the top.
Riding the novice lines, Ireland Casswell on a TY 175, was very smooth and well in control, and Lindsay Haig had a faultless ride on his reliable Tiger Cub. Geoff Cunningham, who last rode 25yrs plus ago, came out with a very nice TLR 200, and his sons Aiden and Justin were riding recently acquired TL 125’s. Although the TL’s are going to need some fine tuning, and re-gearing, the trio approached the ride with a lot of enthusiasm, and did learn a bit about this sport of ours.
It remains for me to thank all those riders who came out to brave the Brooweena cold, all our supporters, John Murphy, for keeping an eye on proceedings, and our practice supervisor Terry Telfer."
