TY newby- help!

Post by Kim »

Hi guys. I found a 1/77 TY 175 under some old roofing iron in a friends paddock. I guess it's a C model. Loved it and bought it for $350. It is one of the prettiest bikes I've ever seen- right up with the Cota and 450 Ducati. I Cleaned the carby,(it was spotless) tank (no rust- yay for premix) & airbox ( a disintegrated foam filter), changed oil and sparkplug. The tyres were totally flat and green with mold. I pumped them up- water squirted out of the rim lock holes and they stayed up! Howzat? Two stroke oil paraphanalia had been removed so I put chainsaw fuel into it (25:1) and the little bugger burst into life- started first push. The kickstarter was broken off and the silencer was missing but I'm like a pig in poo.If you can tell me how I will post a photo.
Now some advice-. Tank is orange and dirty white, heat shield is yellow. TYs all seem to have the same graphics but with yellow , orange or blue paint. What's right or were there options?
It starts really easily but is seriously gutless- a fast walk is about top speed. Plenty of compression, leaks at header pipe joint and has no silencer or air filter( it's in the mail from N.Z uni filter e-bay bloke- [email protected] . It just won't rev out. It has a very strange gearbox. The toe piece on the lever is broken but it shouldn't be as hard as it is to change gears.Original oil was pretty clean but I replaced it with Castrol 4T. I have a gear lever from a YZ that fits but the toe part is up near the round case on the motor. Pics I have seen indicate that this is where it belongs- miles away from the peg. Is this right? Is the pattern 1 down and 4 up? Are all those false neutrals normal?
I want to enjoy this little gem to the max while gradually restoring it so any helpful hints and advice will be much appreciated.

Welcome Kim
Even a TY175 motor in good nick will be very gutless with no end muffler and worse if the pipe is leaking near the barrell.
Gears may be troublesome to select due to wear in the linkage which is hidden under a little cover held on with 4 screws where the gearshift shaft comes out (a weak point on that motor and other similar Yamahas of the same era). Parts are available to fix if that is the problem.
If it has only got 5 gears then the bottom end is probably from a DT175
Its the footpeg location that is strange - not where the gearshift shaft is. If it had the footpeg closer to the shifter shaft it would be terrible to ride standing up.
Kickstarts are another weak point. The lever is easy to break and the mechanism inside can slip too, which usually results in a hole being punched in the case by the head of the knuckle clamp screw when it returns too far. There are parts available to fix the kickstart problems.
You should be able to identify which model it is by the engine and frame numbers.
Please do post photos. I use the tab that says "upload attachment" that is below where I am typing this reply.
Please post your stuff in the Twinshock and Classic Forum. There is a beaut topic called "basket cases" in there for old bikes that people rescue and work on
relax, nothing is under control
