I have a 1974 Yamaha TY250. The question is the book calls for one quart of oil in the gear box, the dip stick showes full at one half quart. So whats up. Thanks Scoot.

Dear Scoot
Here are a few possible explanations:
1 The casing on my 1974 TY250 says "1000ml" near the kickstart shaft hole. A quart is more than 1000ml.
2 The bike needs to be upright (not on the side stand).
3 It may have the wrong length dipstick fitted.
4 Not all the oil may have been drained out before you added the new oil.
My TY250 has been going fine for 31 years now and I only use the dipstick to see if the oil is contaminated with water after wet rides ie I just drain then add 1000ml.

Thanks for the info, but I think 1000mililiters is 34oz's. One quart two ounces. Scoot.

Hi Scoot. I should have guessed you are using USA volume units. In Australian (British) volume units, a quart is 40 fluid oz while a USA quart is 32 fluid oz.

A quart of Aussie beer at any place sounds great to me.

I thought 1000cc was a Darwin Stubbie!
I just use a litre(1000cc) of Dextron Auto Trans fluid. Been using it for yonks now and no worries. Just keep an eye on the level and for any 'mayo' on the dipstick after each ride. No problems!

Sorry Scoot, 'yonks' means for a long time. Yes, I've used the ATF for a number of years without any problems.
