Electronic ignition for TL125

Post by manxman »

Like most people, what little I know about my bike is gleaned from taking it apart regularly and putting it back together. This does not extend to the sparky bit, all I've done there is fit a new condenser and its much better now. However, if there were to be an electronic ignition that fitted, I could be persuaded. Points and things have always been a bit of a mystery!! Anyone know if its possible?

I am not 100% sure, but it is possible that the electronic ingition system from the XL125/185/200 from the early 1980's may fit on the TL125 engine, as they are based on the same basic engine design.

Hi yes have seen it and read about in quote a few places. XL and CT 125s are obvious sources for you.
Have a search around the old rice forum and http://www.classictrial.co.uk for further infor of those who have gone before.
I've got it on my list of things to do for my TL250. Two schools of thought, one is that your coil may have to be changed as well.
It all started with a KT250 that was so light that it once floated away during an ambitious river crossing.

The TL125 was made and distributed from 1981 to around 1984 with Electronic Ignition as Standard fitment.
They were branded "IHATOVO" and never distributed in Australia.
Sold into Europe, U.K. and of course Japan.
Hope this helps,

Something else that may help.
If you go to the New Zealand Website CustGP.com you can download a TL125 Manual which covers these later bikes.
A very interesting site with lots of other Classic bike info including trials.
Please Enjoy,

The advancer and trigger unit used on later bikes (with cover marked CDI) will fit TL125 head, but you would need to compare the resistance of the early and late source coils to work out whether the CDI system would work without changing the source coil. However for trials use the inductive (points system) will work better than the CDI, in that the points provide longer spark duration and better running, with the only downside being a need for maintenance once in a while.
