tubeless tyres

Post by pcurtis »

Hi all.

Can you fit the modern tubeless tyres to a twin shock TY 250 rims. My friend is looking at Pirelli MT43 on ebay.

Just adding that I realise you would have to run tubeless tryes with a tube on older bikes like TY's but I thought I remember someone saying that tubeless tyre's have a slightly smaller inside diameter to help them seal. Don't know if this has any effect on an older type rim. Any advice appreciated.

Hi
There are several types of rims fited to ty250. I have two wide ones and two skinner ones.
The IRC tube tube tyre is really good but last I tried they were not available. Anyone update on this?

The wider rims take the tubless tyres pretty well. The skinnier ones are very hard to fit.
However when I could not get an IRC tube type I did the following and got a second hand tubless Michelin to stay on one of the skinnier rims.
Using a sand paper grinding disk grind off the chamfer bit on the inside of the bead so it is flat not chamfered. Then I took about 2mm of both side of both rim locks.

Not sure about Perilli. I just know if you got the skinnier rim it will be harder.

Cheers

Pirelli's are ROCK HARD!
Not much chop if you want to do any serious trials work.
Michelin do make a tube type X-11 rear trials tyre, and a tubeless X-11 rear trials tyre in a much better compound than the Pirelli.

We do stock both types of Michelin's.

IRC are still nil stock from the Australian supplier at present.
We can crate and freight bikes Australia wide for very reasonable rates. Ring or email with your location for freight quote.

I fitted a Dunlop Tubeless to one of my TY175's The first ride it came of the bead on one side. I pumped it up to 30LBs when I got home and left it in the shed for two weeks and now it's fine to run at 4-5LBs hasn't came off yet after a few trials, Good cheap alternative.

Just as an aside... i returned to twinshocks recently and the only thing that i really wasn't looking forward too was the tubed tyres, and after 3 rides i have managed to rip a valve out!! On my SWM it is a 36 hole rim and i have located an Aprilia 36 hole rim from a Climber that is tubeless... presently in the process of fitting it to my rear hub and then i can use Michelin x-lights or irc tubeless again.. ooh joy :)

36 hole tubeless rims are hard to find but were fitted to early GasGas txt's, Beta's and Montesa 315's i think... just need a bit of playing around with spokes. Not sure if they will fit in a ty swing arm, guess they should.

Had a friend that laced in a tubeless rim on his TY250. Think it may have been a Fantic, not sure though, just something to check.

Fitted a set of early Gas Gas rims to my TLR a few years back, think they were from a 96 model (36 spoke). Got them new from our friendly Gas Gas Dealer

Had them annodised gold, $ 88.00 for a pair

Just need to learn the procedure for fitting a tubless rim tape & you won't look back

Hi, I have used a Gasgas 36 spoke outer rim along with standard TY spokes to convert my Ty175 Majesty to tubeless. You have many tyre options and can run low pressures which gives much better grip. I use a x-light and have had no issues in the last couple of years.
