What is your opinion of Scorpa?

Post by junek »

Hi all.

Im new to trials. Currently ride enduro and looking to be able to do some skills practice for the snotty stuff. Also, I think I could ride a trials bike around my house once or twice a week without pissing the neighbours off (if it is nice and quiet) which would be fun as the enduro tracks are all 1.5hrs+ from my place.

I have been keeping a look out for a second hand bike around the $3000 to $3500 range. I rarely see Scorpa's come up for sale, but now there are 2 for sale in/close to Sydney.

Is there anything I should know about Scorpa (2008 models specifically)? Are they as good as a Gas/Beta/Sherco from the same era?

Cheers for the help.

Great bikes, I've had two. Good spares and back up from the Hell Team you could do a lot worse. Carb is tricky to get at but there's an easy way by to do it by undoing the top shock mount and swinging out of the way.

Are you looking at the 250 two stroke Scorpa or the 4 stroke 250 or 4 stroke 125?

Thanks guys.

250 2 stroke. Not keen on a 4 stroke - worried about maintenance of an older bike and I'm very light, so I like my bikes to be also

Yes the 2008 SY250 is a fine bike. They feel different to ride to the other two strokes of that era but once you are accustomed to them they are great. It has an engine developed for Yamaha trials bikes in the early 1990s and was based loosely on the early 1990s YZ250 motor. Yamaha later made minor changes to this motor from the original trials motor and supplied Scorpa with them for the SY250 which first came out in about 2000.
They are normally extremely reliable. Having the Yamaha motor was a selling point in their favour especially for riders who put a high value on reliability and long life.
Weak points to look for are:
The clutch actuating arm is weak and some of them break (this was one of the changes made to the motor to allow the Scorpa to use hydraulic actuation of the clutch). It is easily fixed
The middle section of the exhaust can split open at the join if the rider induces an explosion in the exhaust (letting the kill button go before the motor stops fully). It is easily fixed
The kickstart lever end is quite high (hard to get a boot on top of if you are short)
relax, nothing is under control

Thanks for the information. Much appreciated.

I just agreed to buy a 2011 Sherco. Should get it next week. Next weekend the learning begins!

Yes,

Hopefully its in good condition. The seller did send me a long list of maintenance that has been done to it, so I think it will be fine.

Currently trying to sort out a mini trials loop in my suburban backyard! Will post pics when i get to ride/crash it.
