OK. I have been patient, diligent and gentle but firm.

Then I tried Firm but precise.

Then I just tried firm.

But I cannot get the primary weight off the crank on my Basket Case Bultaco Sherpa.

Had a three jaw puller. Wound her up, tap tap.

No.

Wound her up, little heat. Tap Tap.

No.

Wound her up tight lie a tiger. Tap Tap.
No
Little Heat.
No.

To cut a long story short, this thing is REALLY on there folks.

I have tightened the puller to the point of bending a cracker bar with an extension in it, heating the flywheel up to glowing slightly red, and belted the MoFo with a huge lump hammer.

Nuthing doing.

So, It is so tight, that I am at the point where I have already put the cutting disk into the grinder but I thought. No Ian. Wait a moment.

So, I am stuck for Ideas.

Oh, yeah, I also used a hydraulic car jack with chains around the flywheel and wound up to its maximum.

It just broke the chains.

So, Any suggestions.

Oh, the crank is now about half a mm out of true.

So, literally probably have to cut my losses.

Hi Ian,

Just a thought, what do you have in spares (crank or weight), if neither maybe ring Peter @ Bultaco parts Australia and see which he suggests. I can relate to the problem as I have destroyed flywheels before and the problem with using heat is it can make things worse if unsuccessful. In my situation it was always save the crank as I have spare flywheels, your decision as I don't know how good your crank is?

The puller in your photo has quite a coarse thread meaning less tons, whereas a hydraulic puller has a much finer thread and an internal thread displacing grease effectively making more force. Because the motor is already out of the frame, it might be best to take the motor to someone with a better Puller?

Or you could try someone with a press and put the supports under the flywheel and press the crank off the flywheel. I`d have my hands ready to catch the motor when it lets go though. There are second hand flywheels readily available. Judging by your flywheel it is a 250. Graham.

Thanks for the advice.

The big end is shot on the crank so I think it'll need to be split for new bearings and rod.

I was about to see what Pete had at BPA before I did any cutting.

I am in the market now for a better quality puller (Aren't we all).

And I agree that a shop visit could be on the cards.

Well spotted, yes a 250. The motor is a M190 in a M158 frame but don't really know. It's had its serials dodged.

Do you think the crank could come back into true once it's pressed back together?

They don't take kindly to heat - I have one at the moment that has been bent by previous owner using heat and force.

I got the bastard off.

Just bought the best quality 3 jaw puller I could and stuck a longer handle in the cracker bar and pretty much wound it off in about 30 seconds.

I offer my poor engine my sincerest apologies and hope it has come through ok.
