Ah yes. Very close to what I have in mind with JAFTY. I will share at the end with the final pic. Arhhh! The suspense.....
The colours, I tried to keep some of the 'history' behind the old girl in it's freshen up. Freshen up??
Anyway, she had a lot of yellow and a lot of green before the freshen up. I tried to keep this without it being the same, it looked worse! So, between that idea, some frustration (time and parts etc) and a few brews and some cold and flu tablets (not a good combination!) this is the result. Wait until you see the seat..... More suspense
The reasoning behind the RL piston was the duration the port was opened for. Again, I had huge ideas (an expansion chamber design tool was obtained....) but was sick of not riding so some of them didn't come to fruition. So I might be off with my reasoning here? I did think though that because DT's are trail orientated, they are more midrange to top end. Because piston speed is increased with revs, the time at which fuel has to enter the crankcase is reduced hence the full skirt cutaway, increasing duration on the intake pulse. Because the TY is low end orientated it doesn't need the duration but having small ports in the skirt increases gas velocity and improves atomisation of the intake charge. So a DT piston would definately work but I think the RL one is better (after mods)...... Well, I hope the RL one is better.
I am going to have JAFTY on the number plate, but i'm sure there is more then one meaning for the name. A full meet of JAFTY's, JAFTESSA's or....... The mind boggles. Or was that a rattle?

Some more dribble and pics.
I was able to replace all but 1 bearing (I think) in the engine and gearbox. I needed one but was unable to get it through normal channels, so when I found it I had to have it BUT, it was going to cost me $100 for one!! (had to come from Singapore) It was cheaper to buy all 8.... So now I have some spare. This is the needle roller on the end of the primary shaft from memory. I had a broken case (devcon or similar) and I wanted it welded so it had to come out. It, well, they all where a little water damaged as well. Long story short, I was able to get all of the ball bearings off the local bearing guy, I was able to get the clutch arm needle roller genuine and the only other one was another needle roller, which was ok, so I looked for one but gave up on it. The big and little end where no worries (Brad from partsmonster.com) and all the seals where avalible from Yamaha if not not off the shelf from a bearing shop.
I'm not sure of the life the poor thing had but it didn't look good. I don't think one engine part was paired up? The damage to the crank wheels didn't match one another, gearbox cases don't match, broken fins on barrell (which have been fixed) all bearings had water damage, the big end pin has been in and out that many times it nearly fell out etc etc.
The other 2 pics are of my repairs to the footpegs, swing arm and a chainguide mod over the swingarm pivot point and over the bottom frame rail.
Ok, balance training tomorrow, rest thursday, big stuff training friday, rest saturday, first comp day sunday, hospital monday......

The mystery of the meaning of JAFTY continues.......... Mark is stringing us out!
As a kid I would move cattle on my TY.
Cattle being obstinate beasts, would occasionally break through a fence, in total disregard to my intentions for them. This necessitating my backtracking through various gate systems; a cause of much annoyance to say the least.
In a moment of mild anger resulting from such an incident one day; and very much to my own surprise, I discovered that a TY could, with the right attitude and sufficient persuasion, pass across a fence in much the same ungainly manner as a cow!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was perfected often back then, and occasionally used today, still very much resembling the arkwardness of a cow.
Perhaps it is JUMP A FENCE TY.
