dumb ty questions

Post by shaunb »

OK, so I finally found myself a half reasonable TY, its rideable and goes well enough for me to get a bit of practice up but I have a couple of queries, hoping someone can point me in the right direction...

I am missing a footpeg return spring on one peg, are these a pretty generic thing? ie will one of a DT fit, any idea where to start looking?

The footpegs themselves seem a bit on the small side, like dwarf size....no offence intended to our vertically challenged friends...I have seen the pivot pegz advertised, is there a common aftermarket footpeg for TY's?

The front forks also seem pretty soft, far softer than I remember on my old KT,is this just due to age (sagged springs) or were TY's on the soft side from new?

I should mention the bike is a ty250D.

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers

The return spring you use may depend on what type of pegs you use.i think you will find a DT of the same era may come close to fitting the standard ty peg! and ive seen i few differant ways to mod the std peg to make it larger, what i do is use a late model suzuki rm peg. they are steel and i simpley cut the old peg off the ty mount, cut the rm peg at the same point then reweld the rm peg to the ty mount, takes about half an hour, if handy with a 4" grinder and a mig. You can use the rm return spring!i guess this converson would work on any similer peg! There easy to pick up second hand. most young mx riders give them the flick for fancy stainless steel ones. I pay about $15/$20 for them @ the local bike wreckers . The forks on most ty,s now days have saged springs, if they havnt been replaced, some folks take the factory spacer out [ the piece of tin tube] this makes them soft and sag down! you can make a slightly longer spacer [ old handlebars cut up work] that will make them firmer, But can "bind" the spring if spacer is too long. IMO new springs are the go.iam sure a few of the other guys will have a few tips for you!

The standard footpegs are tiny because they are made to roll your outside foot onto the end of it in turns. Most people don't like the long term effect on their boot soles (getting holes drilled through) so they fit wider and longer rests. Turning ergonomics are slightly compromised but comfort and boot sole life is increased.
Yes you can fit pivot pegs but you will need to fit suitable mounts to the TY frame.
The most economical way to get bigger pegs is to do something like trialsmutha has done. I have not found footpegs from another model bike that will directly fit the TY250 footpeg mounts.
There are two kits available that will give you mounts that will allow you to fit modern pegs:
The Sammy Miller kit is a bolt-on and attaches to the swingarm pivot bolt ends and the threaded holes in the bottom cross-tube. They come with basic steel modern size rests.
The B&J Racing kit requires the standard mount be cut off and the lugs that are left behind are threaded for the upper mount bolts.
If you look back in this forum you should find lots of photos and info about TY250 footpegs.

Standard TY250 springs are fine unless they have sagged or the rider is very heavy. New standard TY250 springs are stiffer than new standard KT250 springs. Maybe your TY has the wrong springs in it. If you want to measure them up I will tell you if they are standard or not (count coils, measure wire diameter, measure coil OD).

Increased-rate fork springs for the TY are available from B&J Racing. As trialsmutha said, there is very little intercoil gap left in TY springs when the forks are bottomed out so if you add more than about 8mm of preload spacer length over what is standard, the coils will touch before the forks bottom (ouch).

How much pre-load spacer can be added to a TY175B?

I don't remember exactly, but its not much. I remember trying air caps and preload spacers a long while ago and not ever being happy with the result. TM125 Suzuki MX bike fork springs fit and are stiffer but I reckon the the front end sat too high with them. There are probably lots of other bikes at the wreckers with 30mm forks that would be stiffer as well.
One thing that works well with TY175 forks if they are too soft for the weight of the rider is to fit TY250 twinshock forks and clamps. I've been using them since about 2004 on my TY175B.
