Think the TL has a leak??

Post by wil15424 »

Hi all !! pardon my lack of knowledge & ignorance but I have yet another ??
I had a quick look through the removable side covers at the dynamo/generator thinking I might look for the timing marks etc to set the points gap.

So while I was grunting & groaning on my hands & knees I noticed It looked quite oily in there?? hmm I am concerned that this casing should be dry because its the electrical heart of the bike not oily??.

So do I have a major problem with a blown seal or is it ok for some oil to be in here or is it easy to replace if a seal is stuffed & will the oil have buggered other components in there

Bugger me every time I put a spanner to the TL to make it rideable I find another problem. :(
Just gave the carby a good clean &fixed the warped manifold problem finally, no sticking slide now & a new unifilter, drained the fork oil & put new seals & ATF in, hoping to get a petcock seal this week or might buy a second hand tap, hoping to have a ride on the w'end but came across the above.
please Help I am a bit concerned but hoping Im just a dumb-arse.
thank's heaps again

Put it this way, If you drop your TV in to drum of oil, it will keep on working but if you drop it in to a drum of water it will blow up instantly. I think I would wipe the oil out as much as possible and replace the oil with 20/60 w oil, if it still leaks too much, then change the seals. :-"

Do you have the 'round' tap or the oval shaped one?? I have 2 new oval ones coming from Thai (one for me) and a good round one I replaced on my other bike. You are welcome to either. PM me with your email address and I will send along all the info I have on these bikes.

Hi Wil,

Are you looking in the top cover where the points are, if so there should be no oil in there. The seal is behind the points backing plate and easy enough to replace.

If you are looking in the bottom cover, it should be oily in there!

Hope this helps?

whooo hoo!!! Thank's Greg :D the points area is dry the bottom is a little oily.
I put the carby back together air filter on new secondhand petcock, which doesn't leak, an inline fuel filter, tickled the points found some old fuel laying around put it in the TL fuel on flick the throttle choke BOOM !! first kick gotta luv that Honda reliability  .had a fiddle with the mixture was running fine but had the 4 stroke cough on hard acceleration & some popping on deceleration so maybe I need to fiddle with the mixture or jetting or both,I will do some reading unless its not worth worrying about any help greatly accepted.
the clutch seemed to slip pretty bad when flicked to lift the front wheel which it didn't but I will be changing the oil so hope that helps. :D
still lots to do but will have a little play first.
Happy Day's
