TY 175/250... opinions on suitability please.

Post by Ockerstrom »

I'm trying to get in to easy/low level trials riding.

Though I've never done trials before, I am a long time (43 years) rider on road and dirt, and have owned a large number of bikes (20 so far, two of which are still in the garage).

Not being familiar with the various competition levels, I've heard that owning an older trials bike will allow me to compete in an easier/lower level of competition.

The idea of an old bike interests me too, and among my past bikes were a Yamama 100 Ag bike, and an R5 350 (road bike).

Would something in the Yamaha TY range be suitable for me as a novice trials rider?

I'm thinking the 250, but maybe even a 175 could work. :?:

My budget can stretch to the likes of the Gas Gas 250/280 types of things (just), but I think something cheaper and probably "gentler" would be better for me to start on.

I'm not scared of big cc bikes, 300cc compared to my 1500cc Goldwing is like a Morris Minor taking on a Ford GTHO.... but I know trials is not about size and horsepower, it is more about finesse and technique.

Pertinent information for assessment  almost 61 years old, moderately fit but with a couple of niggling issues that cause pain (but hey, hasn't everyone got those problems at my age  ), hover around 82kg > 85kg, about 5'10" tall in the old language.

Current and recent bikes.. DR650, KLE500, DL650a V-Strom, GL1500 Goldwing, KLR650, BMW R1150GS.. and others.
So "getting a leg over" is not a problem
 (oh dear, the old and bawdy jokes, the schoolboy humour.. I will never grow up, and have absolutely no intention of ever doing so  )

I have some reasonable wrenching skills, so again, an old bike does not make me tremble in fear of breakdowns (my lack of a workshop or decent work area causes me more stress than what I own in the way of machinery these days).

Looking forward to the opinions and input, thanks folks.

There are modern bikes that are just as gentle in the motor performance as the TY175, and are much lighter. Thinking any of the modern 125 two strokes and the discontinued Scorpa 125 four stroke would all be excellent to start riding trials on. The modern 4 stroke Beta 250/300 is also very good for people who want a gentler throttle response. There is also a Beta 200 two stroke which would also be good for a learner but just not as gentle as the 125. The modern 125 two strokes are superior in motor performance to a standard TY175.
If you are hell-bent on riding a twinshock and want one that is easy to ride, the TY175 is good, and so is the Honda TLR200. The TY250 is 10kg heavier than the TY175 and feels it. Standard BCDE models of the TY250 have a similar gentle throttle response to the TY175. You are the same height as me and I find the standard TY175 riding position feels a bit cramped. To ride a twinshock you really need to want to ride an old bike. There is absolutely no advantage for trials learners to start on a twinshock.
Re section severity; the severity of sections that you ride is your choice no matter what sort of bike you ride, so don't let that influence your thinking.

Thanks David,

jml just mentioned a similar thing about the difficulty levels and "old" v "new" bikes in the same comp levels.

To be honest, a four stroke would probably float my boat more than a two stroke these days.... just seems to be my "feel" as I get older.

Just had a look on youtube at the Scorpa 125s.... nice.

I think a four stroke one of those would do me nicely as a beginner, and probably for a long time after as well.

Better start looking for one I guess... but won't exclude the other options mentioned either, I just want to get my hands on something so I can make a start on a new sport.

Just something about the Scorpa 125 4 stroke. As a 125 the flywheel effect is fine and the response is very nice, but if the bike has the 150cc or 175cc big-bore kit, the motor is nowhere near as nice to use in trials sections (but is better for trail riding)

Thanks David, more grist for the mill.

I will have to try to get a go on something just so I have a comparison point I think.

TY 250 monoshock??

How do these stack up as a beginner/ongoing bike for a novice trials rider?

Worth following up on?

I'm still hoping to get out to PP and check out The Hell Team for what they may have.

And there is a later model Beta in Vic. that has my interest, but not being able to view it in person and the transporting issues have me hesitant about it.

If only I knew someone who could have a listen to it, and also anyone who has suggestions on cost effective freight to Sydney...

The search continues.

TY250 monoshock was the Ferarri of 1984 and was soon surpassed, becoming the Volkswagen Beetle of 1988.
If you have ridden other early mono trials bikes like Fantic or Beta air-cooled monos, you would get a shock getting onto the Yamaha.
On the good side, like most Yamahas, they are well made, reliable and long-lasting
For you they would be a bad choice because you will learn much faster on a modern bike

Thanks David.

I've been given a lead on one but know no details yet.

Bloody Hell..... now I'm getting confused.

So, should I concentrate on looking for--

My original idea of a TY175/250
or..
The monoshock TY250
or..
A Beta Rev3 250
or..
A Scorpa SY250

It seems my original "old school" bike so I can start in the easy Trials sectors is not really an "essential".

So I'm now considering several leads on other bikes that might do for me to start off on in the sport of Trials riding.

This is getting harder than it was when I was sorting through the ADV bike choices available a while back.
You'd think that after 40 odd years of owning bikes I'd have it all sussed by now. #-o

I think you will find the Scorpa or the Beta easier to learn on and get parts for, a twin shock or the Ty mono would make a good project for later on,
