TY175 Fork Seal replacement - I am foxed!

Post by rupertshaw »

Hi I am in the process of replacing the fork seals on my Orange an white 1977 TY175 and need help

1) The cir clip and washer came out really easy

2) The old years 30+ years old were a real battle I ended up dissolving them out with Acetone - they had fused to the inside of the fork leg.

3) The original seals were seated above and below a lip in the fork leg. Not visible when the original washer and cir clip came off.

4) All the new seals are the right diameter but don't look like the original i.e. they are are a single cylinder with no groove for the lip in the fork leg

5) Do I try to force the new seals over the lip - it's at least 2-3 mm proud of the inner fork tube

Thanks in advance

Looks like you have removed the rubber parts of the old seals but the steel ring which forms the OD of the old seals is still there.
Warm the aluminium to about 120 degrees to loosen the fit before you try and get them out
relax, nothing is under control

Hi thanks for the tip.

However the lip looks permanent and is the same for both form legs.
If it was part of the OD of the old seal it should be a smaller diameter than the tube and come out . The new seals have the circular apron types seal embedded in them.
No sign of a solid was the same diameter as the seal

On some seal ODs the fit is metal to metal
relax, nothing is under control

And so it was - I was wrong you were right

In the oven 120c bit of persuasion and out they came

Metal on metal on the OD and 30 years on adhesion

Just the engine rebuild to do
