im looking at buying a modern trials bike and am unsure of what to buy? ive rode twinshock trials on and off for many years but am now looking to have a go on a modern bike. im looking at something early to mid 2000's and around the $5000max. my problem is which bike to buy? i like the lookof the montesa or sherco. i know all of these modern bikes will be brillant after my TY250B but some pros & cons on all/any of the modern bikes would be appricated and may provide some good info for future buyers also.

For $4500 you should be able to get a very good condition 2004 model bike. If you like the Mont, or Sherco, then get one of those!
I belive that the Montessa build quality is exceptional, I don't know much about the sherco's of the time.

It's said many times on this site and others that "There is no such thing as a bad trials bike now days".....just previous bad owners
So you just have to spend the time to ride the bikes and see which one you feel good about.
As you are in NSW you just have to check out two of the best dealers/importers in the country.
Paul Arnott in Artarmon, Sydney and Don Murray in Canberra.

Also the Montesas are a brilliant bike to ride
my Brother-in-Law has a 2001 315 my sister has a 2004 315, my Fiance has now aquired my 2006 Repsol 4RT and I have another one the same.
And we a quite happy with them.

Stick with a Yamaha engined machine, there's a reason why your TY250B is still knocking around!!!!!!
I ride the little Scorpa 175 which for any thing up to Bgrade will tackle any section on an even par with the big boys, I must warn you that you do have to change the oil every 6 months just so you feel like your maintaining it, and every couple of trials you have to put more fuel in her!!!

If you're still in love with the puppy, wait 'til you ride the daddy. Just started riding the 250F.... It has more talk (torque... just 4U Maree) than Neo!!!! And all those sweet things a Yam/Scorpa hybrid has to offer!
Twin shocks are great but "Overnight Post" for parts has a lot going for it too! If you want to ride and not look at a bike in the shed stay in the mid to late 2000's.

Whilst I agree with some former replies that the old TY's are a great old bike (though somewhat noisy in my opinion), I have ridden some of the old bikes too, but will say plainly that the newer machines will improve your riding. In that I mean some of the elusive trials techniques are much easier to master on a modern bike with it's better suspension, brakes and snappier power delivery. I also am impressed with the more supressed noise of modern water-cooled bikes. This is very important for the future of our sport and neighbourly relationships. Buy a new bike - you won't regret it - neither will those within earshot!

G you are spot on about most of the modern bikes being blissfully quiet. The one that has me surprised though is the Montesa 4RT. The booming noise from one of them (if the muffler is modified) carries a huge distance compared with other modern trials bikes.
On the old bike thing, there are quiet old bikes if you look for them. For example among the most competitive of the Twinshock bikes are SWMs, Fantics, late model Sherpa Ts and Cotas and all are very quiet bikes. There is even the Yamaha TY175JC (the TY715 with the ADR compliance plate) if you like Japanese bikes.
