Hand Held Tachometer

Post by jmclean »

Does anybody know where I can get one of these?

Has anybody got one, and if so, what brand/model is it?

I gather there's generally 2 types: inductive (a sensor clamps onto spark plug cable), or wireless (a sensor picks up electrical noise from spark plug).

There's plenty of optical tacho's on eBay, but they're not suitable.

Cheers, Jim

Jim

My workshop type dwell/tachometer is a cheap Asian made Lucas brand and uses a clip on the plug lead for the tacho. It is 30 years old and still going strong and was bought from a car parts supplier (Bumper to Bumper I think). There are so few vehicles still running with ignition points now that I suspect that this sort of instrument would be quite rare in shops nowadays.

Fancy looking electronic car engine tachos that mount to the car dash are available from car accessory shops.

If its for the idle speed of your 4RT did you think of using an optical tacho on the front sprocket and correcting the reading for the gearing reduction?

I use a great little one (wireless) that is designed for Chainsaw maintainence. About 1/3 the size of a pack of ciggies.

STIHL - no model number. I just got it at the local mower shop "the Big Mower" Chatswood.
