Definition of classic and values of bikes

Post by syms »

Hi - Sorry I guess this would be asked a thousand times before...

I dont have a bike here in Australia and I am looking for one . I am romantically drawn to twin shocks from my past riding in my younger years

I have looked through the site and cant find the info I want , the link on the site around rules also seems to be dead.

Can you tell me if there are any rules around age of entry I am 40 plus and also what types or years of bikes are deemed eligable for Classic/Twin Shock competition presuming I can remember how to ride.

Can anyone also avise the market values of 348/349 Cota's , Ossa Mar 250

I notice there are a few twin shocks on Ebay and was wondering what the values are here. I know its subjective but I was wondering if it was worth shipping to functional but non restored bikes I have from the UK?

I am particulary passionate around an 1981/82 Montesa I have but I guess by the time it getes here unrestored it could be owing me 2500 dollars upwards.

Any feedback and advice warmly received.

Hi Syms

I will have a go at helping as there is little to do at work today.

I am now 53 and just back into bikes after twenty years. I first found a 2003 Beta 200 for $4000 about a year ago. Beautiful bike to ride love it heaps. But the guys I ride with all have twinshocks so to be part of the group I went out and bought a 1983 TLR200 in excellent condition and paid $2500 but this could be just a bit high. Then I just had to have a 1975 TY175 that set me back $1500 and a bit more to do the top end up.

I guess I am a bit easy parting with my money but hell I wanted them and I am now riding them instead of dreaming about them.

I believe there is no age barrier for the rider. The bike has to be pre December 1986 to be a twinshock and must not have disk brakes.

Like everything a bike is only worth what the market will pay for it, but I find ebay usually is about right for most bikes but look at them first before buying.

There you go that filled in ten minutes

Thanks your 10 Mins warmly received

I think the way to go then will be to look at maybe a local Montesa , there seem to be a few , I know them a little and Ossa's seem to hard to get parts for here. Sounds like at those numbers importing is a waste , it will cost 1000 bucks a piece and they are not that special.

I shall start the look, I agree with you , 20 years ago I couldnt afford them now I can , so I should buy part with a little money and enjoy and appreciate maybe someone elses restoration, otherwise I know what will happen it will be another 5 years in teh making getting back on a bike.

Cheers sound advice I think that a newer bike maybe to teach my girl on and a oldie for me..the best of both worlds.

White Wonder Cota 349s were popular here in Australia but the numbers are nothing like what would have been sold in the UK. The first model (red) 349 was also sold here.
The market here is generally quite soft for twinshocks. It is yet to take off here like it has in Spain, France and the UK, and may not.
Ridable 1980 and 1981 349s sell for between $1000 and $1500. A bike needing restoration would be $500 to $1000.
One set up properly with new tyres and good shockies and looking nice would be closer to $2500 - $3000.
About the same $$$ for 348s and there are a lot more 348s around.
Not many people ride OSSA MARs in competition here. Maybe being an early 70s bike they are seen as not being competitive against the later twinshocks (Fantic/SWM/TLR/Majesty). However OSSAs are a bit collectable and tend to be more expensive than Cota 348s and 349s.
Any trials bike that was sold new with two shocks is eligible for twinshock here. There is an arbitrary cut-off date which was extended a couple of years ago to include TLR250s and the last model SWM.
We have Classic class also which has a 1 January 1965 cut-off date. Major items and ground clearance are limited. You can read it all in the OZ rules book.
There are rider age classes but not for twinshock or classic so if you want to ride Veterans (>40 C grade line), or Masters (>35 B grade line), most (but not all) older riders tend to ride moderns in those classes.
Twinshock and Classic classes are usually run on the Clubperson line.
