Hi all,
Rently picked up a 1976 TY175 and the front pipe is rusted out and needs replacing. Tried a couple of second hand ones and they'll all in much the same shape being almost 40 years old.
So what do you suggest? -
Cough up ~$150+ for a replacement front pipe? -

...although it's designed to fit the WES exhaust system, so even if I did go this route it could be a bit difficult to attach to to the old muffler? In which case I'm up for another ~$300 for the WES exhaust -

At this price, perhaps it's cheaper to just get someone to weld me up a front pipe from scratch. What do you guys suggest??

As long as that fitting that bolts onto the motor is in workable condition, any competent exhaust shop should be able to copy the bends, and weld you up a reasonably good copy.
Cost and quality will vary from shop to shop, as will customer service, but just talk to a couple of exhaust shops before you commit to anything.

There are preformed bends available that can be welded together to replicate the original and yes as Mark said it saves some labour cost if they can reuse the flange piece on the end. I would be surprised though if someone could do the job for you for much less than the cost of the SM product, and have it look nice and make some profit.
I've seen plenty of SM headers joined to Yamaha mid sections using a piece of silicone rubber hose.

Ok thanks for the suggestions
David, just so I'm clear - you're saying that joining that SM front pipe to my existing muffler shouldn't be much more complicated than sawing off the old front pipe, attaching the new one with a silicon rubber hose and some clamps?

I can't find a photo. Maybe try asking forum member trials_60 for what he thinks of how well it works. He has a TY175 set up like that

Awesome, I'll give that a try. Thanks!

I have a friend in Thailand and we are currently looking at getting TY250 header sections made in Indonesia, just waiting on the 1st prototype as I have supplied an original to replicate. I'll keep you updated.

Hi, I have the SM pipe on my TY175 - the SM pipe slips into the muffler, used hi-temp silicone and seals with no problems. See photos attached. cheers, Greg.

Thanks Greg. Sorry I got your forum name wrong earlier on. Did you originally have some silicone hose as a joiner or am I thinking of someone else's bike?
